Is Buying In Bulk Saving You Money?

Are We Saving Money When We Buy In Bulk At Big Box Stores?

Is Buying In Bulk Saving You Money?

There is not a “one answer fits all” on this subject. I like many people, shop these stores.  Stores such as Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’S in hopes of saving more money. Buy more save more right? Wrong. So is Buying in Bulk saving you money?

While there are many products you can save money on when buying in bulk, that isn’t always the case. You aren’t always getting a better price just because the packaging is bigger. There are some things you need to consider before buying in bulk.

  1.  What is the Unit price for the item you are buying?
Break it down and find out how much each item is going to be costing you. You may just figure out that you can get them cheaper at Wal-Mart or another grocery store in a smaller size.
  2. Will the products go bad or expire before my family will eat them?
If you end up throwing it out then you didn’t save money. Items like produce, sunscreen, ice cream or even condiments. Unless you have a huge family, you may not use that much mayo in a year before you have to throw it away. Fruits and Veggies go bad quickly so keep that in mind as well.
  3. Is this an impulse buy?
Is this something your family uses weekly? Would this be on your list? Or are you just buying it because you get a lot for the money? You are wasting money if you buy it solely because you think it is a good value. If you don’t need it don’t buy it.Consider these things every time you pick up something to purchase. Even at a regular store you need to remind yourself that you do not need to buy something just because.are we getting a good deal?

I Went To Social Media and Asked:

“What products do you buy at Sam’s Club, Costco or BJ’s to save you money?”

I was surprised by the amount of responses I got. I took notes and made a spread sheet of items that were the most popular and priced them at Sam’s and Wal-Mart both so we can all compare.

Also I want thank everyone who gave such wonderful information and for sharing with me. Your comments helped me so much in making the spread sheet below. I had to break everything down to “Unit Price” to get the most accurate numbers.

As you can see, there are so many products that will save you money buying in bulk. There are also several that may be costing you. You have you look at the difference in price. Then think about how much money you spend per year for your membership. Ask yourself “Am I really saving money buying this here after I factor in the membership fees?”

There are so many ways to be getting products cheaper. Here are a just few ways.

Ways to Save More:

  1.  Shop weekly ads
Take a few minutes each week and look through your weekly ads. You may find that ground beef is on sale for less than even at Sam’s or Costco. This goes for everything you use weekly. When you find something you use often on sale stock up on it. This allows you to have enough on hand until this item goes on sale again.
  2. Coupons
Most of the Membership stores do not accept manufacture coupons. For example let’s say you are brand loyal to Tide laundry detergent. Sure you can pay $21.48 for 225 oz ($0.10/oz) at Sam’s, but if you were to go buy it at Wal-Mart in the smaller bottles of 40 oz on sale for only $5.24 and you can use the $2 off one coupon from Sunday’s paper making it only $3.24, which mean you are only paying $.08 per oz. Buy a few bottles.
  3. Zaycon Fresh
My new favorite way to buy fresh meat! Seriously if you have never tried it you should! You will be pleasantly surprised at how much you will save.  Zaycon Fresh  offers fresh bonelsss skinless chicken breasts for only $1.69/lb. You order online, buy in bulk then pick it up somewhere close to your home. (I’ve noticed church parking lots are their typical pick up locations) Super easy and saves so much money!

I love my Sam’s Club and am so glad to have a membership there. There is a list of things I buy there and love. If you are looking for more ways to save money check out 7 Meals for Under $50.  Let me know what other grocery saving tips you have in the comments!
